Email security

This section explains how to safeguard your email from spam, viruses, and other security concerns.

Anti-Virus Configuration for Email

Using Kaspersky Internet Security’s Mail Anti-Virus, you may scan email communications for harmful things. Mail Anti-Virus begins scanning all email messages sent or received over the POP3, SMTP, IMAP, and NNTP protocols, as well as via encrypted connections (SSL) over the POP3, SMTP, and IMAP protocols, when the operating system is started.

Mail Anti-Virus checks both incoming and outgoing messages by default. You can enable scanning of only incoming messages if necessary.

To set up Mail Anti-Virus, follow these steps:

  • Open the application’s main window.
  • In the lowest part of the window, click the Settings 2019.png button.
  • The Options window appears.
  • Select the Mail Anti-Virus component in the Protection area on the left side of the window.
  • In the pane, you can see the Mail Anti-Virus settings.
  • Make sure the switch in the upper right corner of the window that allows you to enable or disable Mail Anti-Virus is turned on.
  • Choose a degree of security:

Recommended. When this security level is selected, Mail Anti-Virus scans all incoming and outgoing messages, as well as any attachments, and performs heuristic analysis using the Medium scan level of detail.

Low. If you choose this protection level, Mail Anti-Virus will only analyse incoming messages, not associated archives.

High. When this protection level is enabled, Mail Anti-Virus scans all incoming and outgoing messages, as well as any attachments, and performs heuristic analysis at the Deep scan level of detail.

Select the action you want Mail Anti-Virus to take when an infected object is found from the Action on threat detection drop-down list (for example, disinfect).

If no risks are found in an email message, or if all contaminated items have been cleaned successfully, the message is made ready for future use. If the component fails to disinfect an infected object, Mail Anti-Virus renames or deletes the object from the message and adds a notification to the message subject line noting that Kaspersky Internet Security has processed the message. Kaspersky Internet Security produces a backup copy of an object before destroying it and stores it in Quarantine.

The user-configured Mail Anti-Virus settings are not saved when you update to a newer application version. The default Mail Anti-Virus settings will be used in the new application version.

Unwanted email is blocked (spam)

We recommend that you enable the Anti-Spam component and set the Recommended security level for it if you receive a lot of unwanted messages (spam).

To enable Anti-Spam and adjust the Recommended security level, follow these steps:

  • Open the application’s main window.
  • In the lowest part of the window, click the Settings 2019.png button.
  • The Options window appears.
  • Select the Protection section on the left side of the window.
  • Select the Anti-Spam component in the right side of the Protection section.
  • The Anti-Spam options are displayed in this window.
  • Use the switch in the right part of the window to enable Anti-Spam.
  • Make sure that the Recommended security level is selected in the Security level section.

Anti-Spam has the following limitations:

  • Regardless of the protocol used, the Anti-Spam component can only evaluate messages that have been fully downloaded from the mail server.
  • The Anti-Spam component does not examine email sent using the MAPI protocol.
  • When you upgrade to a newer version of the application, the Anti-Spam component is disabled. You can manually enable the component.
  • To enable the Anti-Spam component, you must accept the conditions of the Statement regarding data processing for Anti-Spam if the application is compatible with the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
