If you’ve recently bought yourself a brand new laptop, smartphone or tablet, it might already have the Wi-Fi 6 standard. If so, upgrading to a new router is probably necessary if you want to get more. The most economical way to achieve this is to use Asus RT-AX55.

Due to the fact that it is dual-band rather than tri-band, its advertised peak speed of 1.8Gbps is very low compared to some of the more costly Wi-Fi 6 routers available. The majority of common residential internet requirements may still be met by this, which also offers quick, dependable online surfing, music and video streaming, as well as the unplanned casual gaming.

With its streamlined black shell and faster-moving red lines, the RT-AX55 has a modern appearance. It has four extra Ethernet connections in addition to the one Gigabit Ethernet port enabling a wired connection, if necessary, to your current modem or router.

To get you started, there is an app that is simple to use. You must first scan a QR code that is buried on the router’s base in order to establish an initial connection, after which you must create a password. We were also happy to learn that the software provides you the choice of setting up two distinct networks or a single network that includes the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. The option of launching a web browser interface, which offers more precise control over the network settings, is also available for experienced users.

While retaining peak speeds of 100Mbps and 12.5MB/s for Steam downloads on its 5GHz band, Asus RT-AX55 offers a significant boost over shorter ranges. While the 2.4GHz band dips to 90Mbps and 11MB/s with Steam, it is still fast enough for ordinary web surfing and streaming video.

The majority of the anticipated (draft-level) capabilities are included on the Asus RT-AX55 WiFi 6 router, and one of the most intriguing new technologies is OFDMA. Given that a WiFi channel is divided into tiny resource units that can be shared by several client devices or, if not required, the full channel will be assigned to a single client, using orthogonal frequency division multiple access can result in a greater throughput. The beauty of this function is that it supports both downlink and uplink allocation and can operate on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
